CLIENT CHALLENGE

A big uncertainty and challenge for the project was whether annular remediation would be required. During assessment of wells, it was identified that the annuli was most likely partially cemented, and the Jet-based PWC® HydraHemera System was chosen over cut & pull and section milling.

The scope also changed when an unexpected hurdle of additional plugs were added to the original campaign due to actual well conditions.

Technical complexity posed challenges as three plugs were located in shallow zones, making the operation challenging with regards to cementing operations, requiring innovative problem-solving and flexibility.

BACKGROUND

Formed in 2015, WellGear B.V. is a leading global well intervention and decommissioning company. Head-quartered in The Netherlands, WellGear works collaboratively with HydraWell’s team of decommissioning specialists on several projects to deliver complex onshore and offshore operations.

Partnering with HydraWell, this campaign marked a pioneering onshore initiative to Plug & Abandon (P&A) three wells in an onshore gas storage field. This involved the installation of multiple PWC® plugs. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling played an important role in tailoring the HydraHemera™ system for deployment. CFD is now a well-developed methodology using computing analysis to examine and simulate solutions that involve fluid flow, -movement and –concentration. This technique helps deepen the understanding of fluid interactions that occur when using the PWC® technique.

HYDRAWELL SOLUTION

It was natural to partner with Lee Energy Solutions (LES) for a flexible perforating solution where number of perforations are chosen onsite based on the pre-PWC® logging results.

By providing innovative hydraulic systems to improve well safety and efficiency, LES were the ideal partner for the delivery of advanced tools and engineering expertise, delivering efficient and innovative solutions:

  • Gator Perforator Tool: Provided by Lee Energy Systems, this explosive-free hydro-mechanical perforating tool allowed multiple perforations per run without requiring additional permits or hardware
  • CFD-Driven Planning: HydraWell used its CFD library and expertise to validate job designs and assure precise outcomes, even in complex well configurations
  • Custom Cementing Techniques: HydraWell devised a method to cement shallow plugs, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability under changing campaign conditions

“Working with HydraWell was a great experience. When the project scope changed, they proactively sourced the necessary tools and adapted seamlessly. Their flexibility, quick problem-solving, and flawless execution exceeded our expectations again and again. They come highly recommended!"

- Erik van Putten, Project Manager, WellGear.

RESULTS & BENEFITS
  • Environmental & Safety Benefits: The campaign utilised safe, environmentally friendly tools and avoided the use of explosives
  • Time-savings: 50 meter cross-sectional PWC® plugs were installed. Perforating with the Gator saw an average of 20 hrs for all plugs inclusive of tripping. Overall, the average time per PWC® plug was 42 hrs. The quickest PWC® plug was installed in just 21 hrs.
  • Compared with section milling an estimated total of 58 days were saved by utilizing HydraHemera™ PWC® system
  • Successful Execution: All three wells were plugged safely and efficiently from a Hydraulic Workover Unit
  • Scope change: A total of 7 PWC® plugs were installed in 3 wells, successfully meeting the operational and abandonment targets
  • Efficiency: Deployment aligned perfectly with CFD-modelling predictions, affirming the robustness of HydraWell's planning process
  • Flexibility: Additional plugs were handled seamlessly without delays
  • Cost-Effectiveness: By mastering downhole performance through CFD and engineering ingenuity, significant cost and time savings were achieved
This first campaign in the onshore gas sector in Denmark cements HydraWell’s leadership and commitment to innovation. The project highlights our position as a global market leader in P&A technology and operations.

By partnering with Lee Energy Systems and leveraging advanced tools like HydraHemera™ and CFD modelling, HydraWell continues to exceed industry standards and client expectations in expanded geographies and sectors.
